Solar energy is energy from the Sun, in the form of radiated heat and light. It drives the climate and weather and supports life on Earth. Solar energy technologies make controlled use of this energy resource. The sun is a big gas ball made mostly of hydrogen and helium.
Solar power is a synonym of solar energy or refers specifically to the conversion of sunlight into electricity by photovoltaic, concentrating solar thermal devices or various experimental technologies.
The Sun is a huge thermal reactor about 93 million miles away is the source of energy on earth. Only a fraction of the energy transmitted by the sun is ultimately absorbed on earth and that transforms into different types of energy.
The radiant energy travels to the Earth at a speed of 186,000 miles per second, the speed of light.
A total of 173,000 terawatts (trillions of watts) of solar energy strikes the Earth continuously. That’s more than 10,000 times the world’s total energy use.
At the surface of the Sun the intensity of the solar radiation is about 6.33×10^7 W/m2
The energy received on earth from sun is termed as “solar energy” and it reaches in the form of radiations. It was established that solar radiation on earth produce the energy to the extent of about 1300 Watt/m2.
