Will Micro Homes Embrace Smart Home Technology?

Micro homes, or Tiny Houses, as they’re more commonly known in the US, are becoming hot property, so to speak. Although they come in various forms, many associate them with an image of a wendy house on wheels.
Some are almost exactly that – portable cabins designed for a nomadic lifestyle, complete with folding desks, ladders to loft beds and even window boxes adorning the exterior.

Although it seems that home automation has yet to feature in the majority of micro homes, there’s no reason to think that there’s no room for it. Now before you write smart home technology off as an “unnecessary luxury” for such a petite property, it may be surprise you to learn that there are companies offering micro homes complete with granite worktops, wood burning stoves and miniature hot tubs.

Regardless of whether you consider home automation to be luxury or necessity, there are advantages to installing it in your micro home.

If you’re going to go to the trouble of integrating renewable technologies such as solar panels into your microhome, why not optimise the energy that you produce? During the day, you could use the sun’s energy to heat up the water tank ready for a hot shower at the end of a busy day, or run appliances only when there’s ‘free’ electricity available.

In addition, an inexpensive ultrasonic sensor can keep tabs on your rainwater tank, letting you know if the water level gets too low (or too high).

The designers claim that it “is fitted with all essentials necessary for a comfortable prolonged stay without a need to recharge or re-supply.” It has all the comforts of home: a tiny kitchen, a bathroom with toilet and shower (Gizmag says it’s a composting toilet, but the Ecocapsule site says flushing toilet. A composter makes more sense) There is a pullout bed and lots of storage, all in a 4.468m (14′-7″) by 2.407m (8′) egg with an area of 8m2 (86 SF).
