Exertions doubles down on carbon credit

Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong says no coal project will face a carbon constraint that will make them “internationally uncompetitive”.

Ms Wong was asked by Sky News Darwin Bureau Chief Matt Cunningham to clarify Labor’s position on implementing carbon credits for coal projects.

“We have always said we will ensure that, whether its coal mines or other facilities, they will remain internationally competitive,” Ms Wong said.

Mr Cunningham asked Ms Wong again whether there will be carbon credits on projects such as the Beetaloo Basin project.

“It is the same answer. The facilities are identified; it is the same mechanism that Tony Abbot put in place, or referenced, and implemented by the Coalition government.

“The answer to your question is the same as the answer to your question on coal. We’re not going to make people internationally uncompetitive.”
