Renewables cannot replace fossil fuels no matter what we do. Batteries cannot store enough energy because the energy density will never get us there. We would need to increase production of renewables by 90X, it would take the gigafactory 1000 years of annual production to store 2 days worth of electricity demand. It costs 200X as much to store energy in a battery then to store oil of the same energy equivalent. It takes 100 barrels of oil to store 1 barrel of oil energy in a battery. The math flat out does not work.
