Hello, my name is Valerio and I’m one of the co-founders of Abatable.

Today I’m going to explain what carbon credits are and how they can be an effective instrument for a pathway to net zero emissions.

A carbon credit, also known as carbon offset, is a certificate which corresponds to a tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent which is removed or reduced from the atmosphere.

Carbon credits are created by carbon project developers who play an important role in the ecosystem. They are teams of people who have the technical expertise to translate the climatic benefit of the project activities into a carbon credit.

Carbon credits are generally verified through a robust determination of the climatic benefit of the project activities, following the guidelines established by a carbon standard or other third party verification bodies.

Once carbon credits are verified and issued, credits can be purchased by an organisation or an individual as a way to compensate or “offset” for the greenhouse gas emissions they generate with their activities.

To do this, organizations “retire” carbon credits in a carbon registry, so that no one else can use the same carbon credit unit and avoid double counting issues.

Carbon credits alone cannot solve the climate crisis. It is important that we decarbonise our society as fast as possible and minimise our overall emissions by for example procuring renewable energy or adopting supply chain decarbonisation initiatives.

Nevertheless, high quality carbon credits offer an important solution on the pathway to net zero and can help corporates offset their residual hard to abate emissions.
